Per-Olof Nutti Elected as the New President of the Saami Council

At the council meeting in Čávkkus / Oteren in Storfjord, Per-Olof Nutti was elected as the new president of the Saami Council. Nutti takes over from Áslat Holmberg, who has led the Saami Council since 2022.

The newly elected president looks forward to continuing the important work of the Saami Council and strengthening collaboration with Sámi organizations.

– It is a great honor to be elected as the new president of the Saami Council. I look forward to working with our member organizations to promote the rights of the Sámi people and further develop the Saami Council, says Nutti.

The Saami Council elects its leader for a term of two years at a time.

– It has been two interesting and intense years. I am proud of all the important work the Saami Council has done and continues to do. Now it was time to pass the torch to a new leader, and I wish him good luck. I will continue to be closely involved in the work of the Saami Council, but now in a different role, says outgoing president Áslat Holmberg.

In addition to the presidential election, Niko-Mihkal Valkeapää and Ellen-Sara Sparrok were elected as vice presidents of the Saami Council for the next two years. The Saami Council elects its vice presidents from the executive board, in accordance with the statutes of the Saami Council.
