The Saami Council's Culture Committee awarded Dalán grants for the first time, a new grant aimed at supporting the Sámi arts and culture sector in unexpected, urgent, and timely situations.
"We received more applications than we could have expected and have learned a lot about the needs of our cultural field through this work. The large number of applications reflects the needs of the Sámi arts and culture sector for grants like this," says the Saami Council’s culture secretary, Unna-Maari Pulska.
The Saami Council announced the Dalán grant in early 2025 and allocated 150,000 NOK for the grants, which were distributed to 13 people based on applications. Forty-three applications were received, seeking funding totaling 817 175 NOK.
The new chair of the Saami Council's Culture Committee, Lada Suomenrinne, was involved in processing applications for the first time and was excited to see so much interesting work ongoing in kultur-Sápmi: "We had received many applications and would have liked to award grants to more applicants. However, we had to make decisions within the limits of our resources, which left many good applications out.", says Suomenrinne.
In addition to the Dalán grants, the Saami Council awards yearly project and travel grants and year-long work grants. Applications for other grants will be opened in late spring, and a new round of Dalán grants will be opened next autumn.
